Book Review: Wannabe Sasau by Jack Malik

September 9, 2019 by azsamadlessons Leave a Comment

I grew up with poetry drenched in the halls of my house.

We always had more books than furniture, more books than space to breathe. So, I have an affinity for poetry, novels and all kinds of literary works since I was a kid. This book by poet Jack Malik, published by Rabak Lit is an interesting document of Jack’s work. Based on what I read, it was meant to be published in 2016 but was delayed and finally released earlier this year.

The issues captured are a mix of the problems of being an artist, fitting in, being in (and out) of love, admiration for other poets and artists, reflections on hanging out with other like-minded friends as well as introspective reflections of Jack’s state of mind. The book is as much visual since the play of words splattered and asymmetrically placed adds to the dramatic effect of the work.

Sometimes doing stuff like this is more for show than anything (it can be at least) but with Jack’s work, I grew fond of it on some of the poems. I didn’t really love everything in the book (as poetry books tend to be) but the ones I liked were pretty darn cool.

I don’t really write reviews of poetry books in general but after reading Jack’s work, I felt compelled to at least share some of my thoughts of it.

All in all, if you’re at all curious about Jack’s work, do give this book a try. It’s personal and his personality (as much as I have been able to gather so far, from our online interactions) come across strong and colorful in this book.

I’m looking forward to more books from Jack. Can’t wait!

Pros: Strong personality, good vibes, interesting read.
Cons: Some works are stronger than others.
TLDR: If you’re curious about contemporary Malay poetry soaked in the influence of the Beat Generation, check this book out.

[Submissions for Review Consideration]

  • Are you an author who wrote a jazz, guitar or music book?
  • Have you created a DVD or an online video course or subscription based website?
  • Would you like me to review your book/course?

Please send me a message at azsamad2 at gmail.com with:

For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.

Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!

I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p

NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
