This 1966 book is an interesting and helpful book for jazz musicians who want to develop their swing rhythmic feel. This is the first of three books in this series.
This book contains 12 jazz exercises that are moderately slow swing and 10 jazz tunes at moderate swing tempo.
I remember studying this when I was still a young student in college, it was interesting then but now as I look at this book again and read through it, I can really feel how the more I read the music, the more I can intuitively play with more swing rhythms. This is cool because it changes the focus from what notes do I play to what the time feel is like. That feels important.
All in all, this is a cool book that has the power to help players get into swing rhythms and swing feel.
Pros: Good exercises and tunes for developing swing time feel and phrasing.
Cons: Some of the notation is hard to read because the note head sometimes look too thin and feels like it is between two notes.
TLDR: If you want to develop your swing feel and phrasing, this might be a good book to read and study.
