Mini-Lesson Review: 5 Improvised Lines Over Major Chords by Ben Eunson

May 9, 2021 by azsamadlessons Leave a Comment

This Mini-Lesson from guitarist Ben Eunson is the right kind of treat for a creative & inquisitive guitarist. Firstly, you get five great sounding lines that showcase Ben’s personal guitar style. Secondly, it comes with a video demonstration (full tempo & slower versions) as well as backing tracks and transcription notated with Ben’s articulation (hammer-ons and pull-offs).

Everything is beautiful packaged (digitally) & presented on his website & you get to download the PDF and backing tracks (not the video though).

As I worked on the first line, I started to learn how Ben gets some of his more modern note combinations – it’s partly from his articulation and fingering choices. Taking portions of the line prove to be the best way for me to digest his ideas.

Although five lines seems like not a lot, there’s a lot of things to dig into as you try them out.
I ended up coming up with different technical exercises inspired by what Ben played. Over my practice session, I started to hear different melodies that I didn’t play before.

The truth is, that’s the best value that this mini-lesson gives me: creative fuel for my own ideas.

I look forward to study more of the other lines next. But, even after working on concepts from the first two lines, I already am inspired. Thanks Ben for the inspiration!

In conclusion, this mini-lesson package is a great purchase, especially if you’re a fan of Ben’s playing. But, I wouldn’t recommend this for beginners as Ben doesn’t explain the actual line note by note, only demonstrate it. If you need a more detailed breakdown of Ben’s fingerings, I recommend getting his How to Practice series.

Pros: Great sounding modern linear single note lines to inspire & challenge your fingers, ears and imagination.
Cons: Backing tracks are short (edited exactly for one attempt at the line), would be great to get extended backing tracks for practice.
TLDR: Recommended for intermediate/advanced guitarists who want to get new single note line soloing ideas.

[Submissions for Review Consideration]

  • Are you an author who wrote a jazz, guitar or music book?
  • Have you created a DVD or an online video course or subscription based website?
  • Would you like me to review your book/course?

Please send me a message at azsamad3 at gmail.com with:

For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.

Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!

I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p

NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
