Ben Eunson has been making waves on the guitar side of the internet now with his lyrical and tasteful playing. You might have seen him via his videos on Instagram or Facebook or via his PickupJazz features. Fresh from his recent Pickup Music course release, he’s now join forces with Chad Lefkowitz-Brown to release this book entitled 50 Modern Jazz Guitar Phrases.
Even though it’s only been recently released, many guitarists from all around the world have been learning the licks and posting their performances of it on Instagram. Ben is very encouraging and often reposts the videos on his Instagram Stories and Instagram Feed.
This is a really cool part of the new guitar world with the internet. Now, students and fans have a chance to learn & connect directly with the artist.
This 109 page book is full of ideas!
It’s divided into 5 parts:
1) Major 7 Phrases
2) Dominant 7 Phrases
3) Minor 7 Phrases
4) Major ii-V-I Phrases
5) Minor ii-V-i Phrases
Each part contains 10 phrases that are notated in all 12 keys. Both standard notation and TAB is included as well as backing tracks at 3 tempos for practice purposes. The phrases are indeed modern jazz lines which are best played with the right feel and articulation. In order to help us with this, a 25-minute video of Ben playing ALL the examples is available on the website for streaming. You can watch it here.
All in all, if you’re a fan of Ben’s playing – this is a great opportunity to dig into his style and get a lot of practice material to help your chops, ears and fretboard understanding.
Pros: Lots of material, great sounding phrases & you’re able to connect with Ben by covering the phrases on Instagram. A real sense of community here!
Cons: None.
