I previously reviewed Joe Pass Solo Guitar Style by Barry Greene back in 2019.
This time I’m working on Barry’s take on Pat Martino’s melodic language & guitar style.
For context, I’m a huge Pat Martino fan and actually wrote one of my papers when I did my Masters in Music at San Jose State University on Pat’s guitar style. During my time as a student at Berklee, I learned a lot from Garrison Fewell’s Pat Martino Guitar Lab which was an elective at Berklee for guitar students. So when I found out about this offering from Barry, I was excited to see how he used the concepts.
In this 54-minute video lesson, Barry explains his approach to take Pat’s linear vocabulary, demonstrates it across the entire fretboard in all keys & 4 different chord types. Barry also shows how to take the material and apply them in songs.
You get to see how Barry uses his method (to think about Pat’s approach) to make it even easier.
He then shows the difference between Charlie Parker’s approach compared to Pat Martino’s approach. Barry also discusses the differences between Lester Young’s approach to improvisation and how it relates to Pat’s style.
All in all, this video is a wonderful take on how to potentially adopt Pat Martino’s thinking and melodic & harmonic language.
Pros: Great lesson, with tons of great lines played by Barry.
Cons: Earlier improvised examples in the video are not notated. However, you do get the main solos he does at the end of the video transcribed (and that’s still a lot of stuff to practice).
TLDR: If you love Pat’s playing (and Barry’s playing), this video is a goldmine of melodic jazz improvisation ideas and concepts. Strongly recommended especially if you’re up for transcribing more examples that Barry improvised throughout the video.
