Course Review: Sweep Picking Sorcery by Nick Layton

December 14, 2019 by azsamadlessons Leave a Comment

I previously reviewed Nick Layton’s Liquid Fire Legato course last year. This time, I’m sharing my thoughts on his Sweep Picking Sorcery course. Like his other courses, Nick specialises in breaking down 1980s shred guitar styles.

Although I’m not really a shredder (even by any stretch of the definition), I really enjoyed working through the materials in the course. Nick’s focus on giving really great sounding musical examples shines. He includes 45 sweep picking licks that range from easy to advanced licks.

As an avid explorer of shred guitar instruction (especially sweep picking and economy picking in particular), I found Nick’s course useful in many regards. Unlike most typical sweep picking courses or books, Nick doesn’t really begin with more standard public domain sweep exercises. He begins by immediately giving us great idiomatic rock and metal melodies. This makes his approach unique compared to what I typically found.

If you’re into rock and metal (especially the whole 80s sound), you’ll find the licks familiar sounding. Nick is well versed in this style and we are guided by an expert instructor.

Not only do you get the eBook, video and audio (both slow & normal tempos) for all the 45 licks, Nick also includes 3 jam tracks (80s metal, neo-classical guitar & funk rock guitar styles), Guitar Pro files for all the licks , The Sorcerers Toolbox (A complete guide to the theory, arpeggio and scale patterns for each jam track) & even a 6-week practice plan.

It’s clear that Nick has taken a lot of care and thought into making this course. For fans of these classic rock sounds, you’re in for a treat.

Pros: Great material, lots of licks and ideas to digest. High quality video and audio provided along with the book.
Cons: Nick doesn’t actually explains the licks on the video. All the instruction & explanations are in the eBook. The videos and audio are demonstrations of the material in the book.
TLDR: If you’re into 80s metal and neo-classical guitar, this course may help you develop your skills in a musical way.

[Submissions for Review Consideration]

  • Are you an author who wrote a jazz, guitar or music book?
  • Have you created a DVD or an online video course or subscription based website?
  • Would you like me to review your book/course?

Please send me a message at azsamad2 at gmail.com with:

For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.

Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!

I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p

NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
