I’ve been a fan of Mateus’s lyrical guitar playing for some time now & am always curious about what he is doing next. You can read my previous post on him here:

This latest release, “The Storytelling Licks” is the first big digital package hosted on his own website. According to Mateus:
“this is the way i found to tell my story through these licks. i hope this pack can help your way to tell yours!“
What you get is basically a set of videos (all streaming only access) with PDF (29 pages in total) & Guitar Pro files included. You also get. backing tracks and warm-up exercises. These are all professionally transcribed and notated.
There is no instructional material except the warm-up which was explained using a text on screen format.
Although it says that 20 licks are included, this is more like JamTrackCentral style licks package. You get actually way more licks that mentioned!
The licks are definitely difficult.
These are not for newbies to guitar as you might get discouraged. I would say this package is more suited for intermediate to advanced guitarists.
If you love how Mateus plays and wanna get some of that Mateus vibe into your playing, this is a good way to accelerate that. Also, if you want (like me) to be inspired by the KINDS of lines he plays, this package is a wonderful resource. If you already have worked on his previous releases on JamTrackCentral, this package’s format will be familiar to you.
Personally I got so much milleage by listening to how he plays the licks and studying his note choices. The transcription are a great way to help understand how he plays. Mateus really has a unique way of navigating across the entire fingerboard and creating beautiful melodies throughout. There is a lot to unpack especially in how he does ornaments like subtle slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs and bends. These add a vocal quality to his playing.
In short, I strongly recommend this if you enjoy his playing. You certainly get your bang for the buck in this, as long as you shed the material! Check it out.
Pros: Great sounding licks, well transcribed and presented.
Cons: No explanation on how the lines work or though process behind the lines.
TLDR: If you wanna learn a lot of Mateus Asato licks, this is a great package to get!

[Submissions for Review Consideration]
- Are you an author who wrote a jazz, guitar or music book?
- Have you created a DVD or an online video course or subscription based website?
- Would you like me to review your book/course?
Please send me a message at azsamad2 at gmail.com with:
For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.
Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!
I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p
NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
