The thing about learning jazz lines is that you can easily get overwhelmed with what to practice or how to practice something.
On one side of things, some players are very systematic and recommend rigid practice routines.
On the flip side, there are players that are more intuitive and suggest a more free flow kind of approach.
I’ve experienced both the need for systems, as well as more flexible ways of practicing.
In this eBook by Chase Maddox, he shares some interesting lines that give you the chops, the exact guitar fingerings, musical ideas that are a workout, and still retain the musicality. There’s a kind of guitaristic approach to this (using five fingerings that cover the whole fretboard) and a musical approach (going through 12 keys).
The book contains:
- Full Arpeggio Workout
- Full ii-V-I Workout
- Diminished Patterns by Chord
- ii-V-I with Diminished Workout
- Application on “Tune Up”
- Application on “Autumn Leaves”
- Application on “Have You Met Miss Jones”
- Application on “Corcovado”
It’s pretty balanced since you get 4 types of materials and 4 examples of applying the material on tunes. When I practiced with the book, I found that one workout at a time just abut the right of material work on.
The only thing about this particular book (compared to his previous eBooks, The Master Arpeggios Book Vol. 1 and Master Dominant Bebop Patterns and Scales, is that it doesn’t contain detailed left hand fingering and picking directions. Pages 24 and 25 also weirdly do not have tablature (the only pages with tablature notated) – not sure whether that was intentional.
Still, all in all, I feel that this eBook is something that I’ll actually be shedding as it’s helpful for me to get my fingerings more together. If you want a jazz guitar centric workout, this might just be for you. Related to this, you might like Chase’s previous book, “The Master Arpeggios Book Vol. 1 For Guitar” that I reviewed here as well.
Pros: Great material, well organized, thoughtfully written and usable for players and jazz students.
Cons: No audio examples included with the book.
TLDR: Looking for some practical practice material to learn jazz guitar? Get this eBook.

For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.
Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!
I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p
NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
