It’s no secret, I’m a fan of Randy Johnston’s instructional material. This is the latest offering from his ongoing series on Mike’s Masterclasses.
The format is simple. Randy begins by playing on a minor blues. Then he shows the voicings he uses and teaches a written solo that uses the various techniques to create a strong idiomatic single note solo.
The video is 30 minutes and 21 seconds long. Basically this is like taking a private lesson with Randy – and covers one specific topic. For those new to Randy’s work, this is pretty much the format for all his releases on Mike’s Masterclasses. It’s effective, elegant and works. Basically you know what you’re getting.
The coolest thing is that you have something concrete to practice and you can get results very soon after working on the material.
In conclusion, if you want to play bebop or learn to solo over changes, this video is a good resource to help you develop that skill.
Pros: Good concise lesson on soloing on a minor jazz blues.
Cons: None.
TLDR: If you’re not sure how to take a solid solo over a minor blues, this can help you play better lines!

Please send me a message at azsamad2 at gmail.com with:
For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.
Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!
I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p
NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
