Originally released in 1995, this 43-page book was used by GIT Atlanta (now the Atlanta Institute of Music) as class curriculum when Shane Theriot was teaching there. Now available as a download only release (as a high quality PDF scan) , this book contains some amazing advanced instructional guitar material.
The book is divided into 6 sections:
Section 1: Technique
Section 2: Chromatic Concepts and Applications
Section 3: Improvising With Shapes
Section 4: Modern Blues/Pentatonic Sounds
Section 5: Intervallic Sounds
Section 6: Application and Practice Tips
The examples in the book reflect real world applications. As a performing musician and educator, Shane Theriot has brought his experience in this book. As I tried many of the examples, it’s very obvious that the lines and etudes are very challenging. This aligns with what Shane wrote in the introduction of the book, saying that the exercises are ‘somewhat unorthodox, and purposely so.’
In addition to developing your guitar technique, the book discusses many useful harmonic and improvisational concepts. Superimposition, shapes, intervallic and outside sounds are abundant in the book! This can certainly help players who want to get more modern sounds into their playing.
In conclusion, this is a great work that is now available again for current players to check out. Even though it seems like a short book (at 43 pages), do not let that deceive you. This is difficult stuff that demands focus and attention. If you’re looking for a challenge, definitely consider getting this book, now directly available from Shane Theriot’s website.
Pros: Tons of material including MANY challenging exercises!
Cons: None.
TLDR: If you’re an intermediate or advanced guitarist, this is a great book to level up your playing literally to the next step.

[Submissions for Review Consideration]
- Are you an author who wrote a jazz, guitar or music book?
- Have you created a DVD or an online video course or subscription based website?
- Would you like me to review your book/course?
Please send me a message at azsamad2 at gmail.com with:
For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.
Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!
I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p
NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig? 🙂
