Originally released in 1982, this book from Dave Eastlee is a good text on learning different scales and modes all over the fingerboard. Dave is systematic and goes through each scale option to cover the entire fretboard.
The newer edition of this book is called “Scale-Chord Connection (REH Pro Lessons)” and is the same text with new typesetting, but the same material. The new edition also comes with a CD with all the examples played by Dave himself.
This book is one of two that he wrote as a set. The other book originally called Chord Connection is now available as “Jazz Chord Connection (REH Pro Lessons)”.
Personally I do love the look of the original edition with the 1980s typesetting, graphic and design.
However it’s great that this book has remained in print with the new edition. For most guitarists, the newer edition will be just fine! The older edition would be mostly good for anyone nostalgic with how the book used to look like. Content wise you get the same thing, and in fact the newer edition is awesome since you get the CD as well.
In conclusion, this book is a good one to get if you’re an intermediate or advanced guitarist looking for a reference for scale practice (fingering wise). I do feel that because there are no stylistic lines or examples in the book, this book is best used with guidance from a teacher or alongside another book with lines, licks or single note etudes. In combination with the right material, this book can be a valuable resource to master the fretboard.
Pros: Well organized book, systematic and clear.
Cons: No examples of lines or application of fingerings in the context of songs or chord progressions.
TLDR: For an intermediate/advanced guitarist (or perhaps a beginner with a good teacher), this book could be a good resource for learning possible scale choices for improvisation and composition.
[Submissions for Review Consideration]
- Are you an author who wrote a jazz, guitar or music book?
- Have you created a DVD or an online video course or subscription based website?
- Would you like me to review your book/course?
Please send me a message at azsamad2 at gmail.com with:
For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.
Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!
I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p
NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
