I first encountered this book in bookstores across the US—from Las Vegas to Asheville and NYC. I resisted buying it then (the “too many books” struggle is real), but the universe finally smiled on me when I found it at my local library. Two days later, I’ve already finished my first read.
Jeff Tweedy is a gifted writer, and this book is a genuine joy to experience. He breaks the process into four distinct parts:
- Part 1: The Philosophy. Tweedy offers motivational “vibes,” reframing the daunting task of writing “songs” into the manageable act of writing just one song, then another, then another.
- Part 2: The Lyrics. Practical exercises to bypass writer’s block and get into a lyrical flow.
- Part 3: The Music. Encouragement to capture musical fragments and four specific recommendations to accelerate your exploration.
- Part 4: The Aftermath. How to handle the challenges and doubts that creep in once a song starts taking shape. He also talks about the rationale why he doesn’t record into a DAW and keeps it simple.
The book has a wonderful flow; Jeff makes his mind and process feel incredibly accessible. It’s the kind of resource I’ll return to repeatedly. If you’re a fan of Tweedy’s work or just looking for a spark, this is a no-brainer. It worked for me—I finished the book and immediately tracked a demo for a new folk tune. I even did some multi-tracked guitars for fun.
Pros: A deeply personal, expert take on the craft from a master songwriter.
Cons: Not a technical manual; don’t expect harmonic or chordal theory exercises.
TLDR: A nice kickstart for anyone looking to write their first song or break a creative drought.
