Video Review: What Makes a Strong Solo? Part 1: Melodic Clarity by Juan Dhas

May 11, 2021 by azsamadlessons Leave a Comment

This is a 22-minute master class to help develop stronger jazz guitar single note soloing. Juan Dhas explains how this video is the first part of a three part video set. Along with the video, you get a 6 page PDF file with text explanation and musical examples on this topic.

Juan is articulate and has a calming voice which is helpful for the mood of the video. There are a lot of ideas that he covers in the video especially towards the end of the video. He shares different ideas that you can explore depending on your improvisational ability & familiarity with the fretboard (and chord changes).

The only thing I wish Juan included were more written examples of what he explained. At some parts I felt there was too much talking compared to demonstrations of how to practice the concepts. I felt like difference between playing the changes & melodic clarity could be explained (demonstrated) in more detail. That being said, since this is the first part of a three part series, I’m actually looking forward to the other two parts so I can see the full picture of what Juan is exploring.

In conclusion, this is a useful video if you’re having problems creating clear melodic lines that outline the chord changes. Definitely a video that is more useful for intermediate players.

Pros: A good introductory video to a practice concept that is important for single note soloing.
Cons: Video is short, only a few notated musical examples provided.
TLDR: Recommended for intermediate guitarists who want to develop stronger single note line soloing.

[Submissions for Review Consideration]

  • Are you an author who wrote a jazz, guitar or music book?
  • Have you created a DVD or an online video course or subscription based website?
  • Would you like me to review your book/course?

Please send me a message at azsamad3 at gmail.com with:

For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.

Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!

I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p

NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
