Video Review: Arpeggios & Comping by Pasquale Grasso

September 24, 2024 by azsamadlessons Leave a Comment

It is literally mesmerizing to watch Pasquale Grasso play. Whether it be in a solo guitar setting or in a trio or larger ensembles, he always sounds amazing.

In this video, Pasquale shares his personal approach to arpeggios and comping. With that being the goal, it definitely delivers. Even though the video is just under 32 minutes, the amount of information and insight in the video is unbelievable.

I definitely got a lot from studying his fingerings and his way of playing arpeggios. When you see him explain and play the arpeggios, it explains why he can play such blistering fast lines. A lot of it is from HOW he looks at these materials and also how he systematically develops his command of them.

For the comping part, there’s a lot of ideas of how to make your comping more rhythmically interesting and also how to practice, which is super important. The onscreen transcription is helpful for you to follow along with what he’s playing.

In conclusion, this is a great video to understand how his mind works and how the logic of his arpeggio fingerings are, as well as his take on chords, comping and combining that with single note playing.

Pros: An insightful video into the technique, fingering, sound and style of a unique musician.
Cons: None.
TLDR: If you love how Pasquale plays, this video is a helpful guide to understanding his approach.

[Submissions for Review Consideration]

  • Are you an author who wrote a jazz, guitar or music book?
  • Have you created a DVD or an online video course or subscription based website?
  • Would you like me to review your book/course?

Please send me a message at azsamad3 at gmail.com with:

For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.

Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!

I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p

NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
