Book Review: Useful Not True by Derek Sivers

November 17, 2024 by azsamadlessons Leave a Comment

The thing about a Derek Sivers book is that is potentially life-changing. Derek is an interesting person, probably one of the most fascinating people I’ve ever met (twice) but as Derek writes in this book – that is what I believe.. which might not be objectively true.

In the fashion of his previous books, Derek has again written a book with interesting ideas, compiled in a most concise way.

In just 88 pages, he distills the human experience – and the quality of that experience by asking:

Is this true?

Is this useful?

What other perspectives exist… and which is the most useful?

It’s interesting for me to read this book now, even though I actually have had it for quite some time.

Perhaps I was procrastinating, or maybe I remembered it because I received an email from Derek. But most importantly, I can choose to believe that today is the right time for me to receive the message in the book.

From the perspective of the book, that is much more helpful than thinking of myself as a failure for not reading the book immediately, or for not already implementing all possible angles of the book as soon as possible… or many other possible angles that probably won’t help me.

And that is the gist of it.

Is it a good book?
For me, yes – it is and it is one that I find useful right now.

Is it the best book ever?
Let’s say it’s one that arrived at the right moment, and for that – it is a good book.

Should you get it?
Well, if you enjoyed any of Derek Sivers posts as I have, this might be for you. I certainly would recommend it.

Pros: Well written book, concise and insightful.
Cons: None.
TLDR: A philosophical perspective or deciding the perspective you take for your experiences and decisions.

[Submissions for Review Consideration]

  • Are you an author who wrote a jazz, guitar or music book?
  • Have you created a DVD or an online video course or subscription based website?
  • Would you like me to review your book/course?

Please send me a message at azsamad3 at gmail.com with:

For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.

Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!

I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p

NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
