The Financially Independent Millennial is an interesting book from Rick Orford who runs The Surplus Academy– an online community that helps folks achieve Financial Independence.
In this 12 chapter, 188-page book, Rick shares his journey from not knowing anything about managing his finances all the way to the point he is now, financially independent & helping others achieve the same.
Some key concepts that Rick shares includes understanding cash flow, assets, loans, expenses, smarter credit card usage, dealing with debt, bankruptcy, side hustles & when to hire a financial adviser or planner.
Rick also shares his experience investing in property and how he began making extra income from his property investments. Many of the stories Rick shares are personal experiences so the relevance depends a lot on where you are in your personal finance knowledge.
Coming from a freelancing or artist/musician background, I enjoyed reading Rick’s take on things. It wasn’t really deep level stuff (if you’re looking for very specific property investment advice, you may need to go to other books or courses), however for someone new to these topics – this book can be a friendly helpful guide.
The highlight for me are the very practical and logical explanations that Rick includes in the book. There’s a lot of learning that takes place for Rick & he shares how his own take on personal finance changes over the years.
Although some of what he discussed wasn’t new to me, the overall content was helpful. I would probably come back to take more notes later on, when I feel the need to reread the book.
At the end of the chapter, Rick also includes a useful summary that he called, “What I’d tell my younger self”. For scanning readers, these are useful to recap the main ideas Rick shares in each chapter.
In conclusion, this is a good introductory book for learning about ways to be financially free.
Pros: Approachable writing style, practical tips & takeaways for readers at different stages of their life.
Cons: None.
TLDR: Although the title says Millennial, this book is suitable for readers of various ages. Recommended if you’re curious about personal finance and developing better strategy for growing your wealth.

Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!
I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p
NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig? 🙂
