Book Review: Six Essential Fingerings for the Jazz Guitarist by Jimmy Bruno

May 9, 2021 by azsamadlessons Leave a Comment

Over the years, I realised that fingerings can limit or unleash your technical facility on the guitar. Sometimes, “popular” left hand fingerings can be detrimental to a guitarist.

In this book, Jimmy Bruno shares six essential fingerings that he feels work best for jazz guitarists. This 33-page book introduces the fingerings, how to connect them and then variations of the major scales fingerings (Dorian, Mixolydian, Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor & Melodic Minor).

The scale fingerings are presented in standard notation, tablature and fretboard diagram to assists guitarists learning the material. We also get a table that summarises which fingerings to practice in what keys.

After working through the material in this book, I realised how useful Jimmy’s specific fingerings are. They are both logical and easy to remember. Some books and methods use more complicated ways of organising fingerings.

In conclusion, I recommend this book for any jazz guitarist who wants to explore a simple logical way to learn the most important scales on the guitar.

Pros: Great well organised material from an experienced jazz guitarist.
Cons: None.
TLDR: Recommended for guitarists who want a simple logical way to organise and learn scale fingerings.

Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!

I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p

NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
