Music Review: Late Night by MFMF. & Tarrarin

August 18, 2026 by azsamadlessons Leave a Comment

The latest single from the fine folks at MFMF. delivers exactly what fans have come to love from the collective: smooth, modern R&B anchored by sharp, contemporary storytelling. The track brilliantly captures the push-and-pull of a modern “situationship” specifically, the messy reality of paying for therapy, knowing your toxic patterns inside out, and actively choosing to ignore the advice anyway.

Lyrically, the track plays on a clear trauma-bonded cycle. The girl craves the comfort of the guy’s availability without offering commitment, while the guy keeps running back despite a dashboard full of warning lights. MFMF. builds this narrative around automotive imagery with late-night calls, driving over, and running red lights.

It makes me ask:

Is this reckless emotional driving just a direct reflection of how Malaysians handle actual traffic signs?

Musically, the production is tight. Built on a lush bed of beautiful chords on the keys, a prominent, driving bassline, and understated (what sounded like guitar) leads that appear in the second verse, the track carries a welcome touch of classic 90s R&B—evoking a subtle Tony! Toni! Toné! flavor. The sound design leans heavily into the late-night theme, utilizing phone tones, call-pickup effects, and a delicate, whispery “Yes” in the first verse that pulls the listener right into the conversation.

The songwriting structure is equally sharp:

  • The “Therapist” motif: Using the therapist’s advice as a structural hook anchors the entire narrative, making the bilingual shift moving smoothly into Malay for the girl’s therapist part feel natural.
  • Vocal Production: Strong backing vocals and dynamic ad-libs (notably by Tararrin around the two-minute mark) add fantastic texture to the hook.
  • Arrangement: Tasteful use of the chorus as an intro at the beginning, and just enough textures throughout the piece.

With its blend of relatable relationship dysfunction, clever lyrical content (can be between those lines – in relation to phone lines, phone calls?), and the cool groove, this track is a standout track that I reckon would sound even more fun in a live setting.

All in all, a cool pop track from the team. Nice one MFMF.!

[Submissions for Review Consideration]

If you are an artist, record label or press outreach interested for me to feature your new release on this site, please email me at azsamad3 at gmail dot com.

I prefer physical CD submissions whenever possible alongside streaming/download links. Do not attach any files to the email but include Dropbox/Google Drive links.

I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p

NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. Thanks!
