Video Review: John Coltrane – Digital Patterns by Corey Christiansen (Chase’s Guitar Academy)

August 2, 2025 by azsamadlessons Leave a Comment

This was a live class that happened on 17 July 2025 featuring Corey Christiansen.

Expanding on his previous videos on Chase’s Guitar Academy, he goes into the topic of digital patterns ‘ala John Coltrane.

Most of the material in this video is applied directly on the first half of Coltrane’s Giant Steps, but the concepts are applicable to other chord progressions and songs.

The most interesting thing for me is to see HOW Corey actually teaches the material and his approach to the fingering choices in this topic. There’s also a wonderful anecdotal story that he shares about a student he encountered when he taught for the Jamey Aebersold workshop which accentuates the point he makes in the class.

Essentially, Corey is saying that by focusing on the simplest material with so much depth, you can really expand your mastery for approaching both the guitar & jazz improvisation.

I was practicing along during the entire 1 hour and 9 minutes, and even within that time, I could already see the results of working on this material with the mindset that Corey shares.

All I have to say is that, even though you might think you know what Corey’s teaching, it’s not the material but the mindset and approach which is potentially life-changing.

I certainly enjoyed and learned more than I expected from this video & would recommend it highly to any serious student of jazz guitar. This is the really good stuff.

In conclusion, if you’ve ever wondered how to get a lot of chops to navigate challenging chord changes, you have to watch this with an open mind. Corey knows what he’s talking about.

Pros: Great class, well taught and well organized.
Cons: None.
TLDR: Want to get some of this Coltrane language together in a deep way? Watch this now, and then shed!

Thanks to Chase Maddox for inviting me to experience Chase’s Guitar Academy. Although I received complimentary access to the community, my reviews reflects my personal honest experience of the material.

[Submissions for Review Consideration]

  • Are you an author who wrote a jazz, guitar or music book?
  • Have you created a DVD or an online video course or subscription based website?
  • Would you like me to review your book/course?

Please send me a message at azsamad3 at gmail.com with:

For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.

Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!

I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p

NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?

Whenever possible, I've tried to include a mention that the link is an affiliate link but since the site is so big by now, I'm including this note so so that you are aware.

That being said, as I always mentions - all reviews reflect my honest opinion of the book/course/product. My goal is not to recommend everything to everyone but to give you as much information about my experience with it so that you have a better idea whether it might be for you (or not).
