How To Effectively Practice Jazz Guitar Licks

August 7, 2019 by azsamadlessons Leave a Comment

Many people learn jazz guitar licks but never figure out how to actually APPLY the licks organically & musically in their solos. In this blog post, you’ll discover 5 ways to maximise each jazz guitar lick that you learn to play. Here’s the 5 ways:

#1 – Understand the concept

It’s not just about the notes but about where the notes come from, the chord & melody relationship. When you understand the concept, you can create even more licks from one lick. This is the perfect lick multiplier.

#2 – Vary the lick endings

Although playing the lick as written or as taught would great enough, varying the lick endings allows you to hear more musical ideas to exist. It also can change the vibe of the lick.

#3 – Change the rhythms

Rhythms have the power to change the groove and energy of a melodic phrases. By experimenting with different rhythms, you can make a lick fit more situations that your initially expected.

#4 – Develop the lick

I’ve written 4 Jazz Guitar Lick eBooks so far. Some licks from my eBooks may appear to be deceptively simple, until you really break them apart and realise they can be motives for entire 1/2 chous solos.

#5 – Jam & apply the lick

Playing a lick as written or as transcribed is a good way to start but to actually jam & apply the lick to your solos is where the licks start making a different.
