If you google jazz guitar lessons online, you’ll find all sorts of information (and misinformation). Here are 3 mistakes that I’ve noticed many of my private students & guitarists new to jazz make.
Mistake #1 – Only practicing scales & modes
Although scales & modes are important, it’s not the ONLY thing to work on to play jazz guitar. These are the alphabets but they don’t represent everything in jazz.
Mistake #2 – Not learning songs
Songs are the lifeblood for jazz. Outside of the circle of geeky harmonically aware guitarists, most people just want to hear songs. If you don’t know the classics, you don’t have the material to express your jazz knowledge. It really is all about the songs!
Mistake #3 – Not learning licks
One of my early guitar teachers told me to not learn guitar licks. This was a mistake as I ended up missing out on HOW to assemble & create strong jazz guitar melodies. Licks are the language, the vocabulary in bite-sized easy to consume bits.
