Video Review: Playing the Blues and Playing the Changes By Randy Johnston

June 16, 2023 by azsamadlessons Leave a Comment

It’s no secret that I love Randy Johnston’s playing and teaching. Suffice to say, I basically get every new release that Randy has on Mike’s Masterclasses as soon as I have time to study it.

This new video is an excellent one since it shows Randy’s clear approach to teaching how to solo on a jazz blues in a simple and direct way.

Randy includes a one page PDF with a 1-chorus written solo over a jazz blues and 4 line examples that demonstrates the concepts he covers in the video. There is no tab included though so you will have to figure out the fingerings from the video should you want to get Randy’s fingering concept. I strongly recommend that. Personally I learned the solo from the notation first (using my own fingerings) and then I learned his fingerings. This was great for me since I got even more milleage by comparing how I approached the solo.

At 33 minutes long, it might seem like this is a short video. However, if you have watched any of Randy’s previous videos you will know that it is this short because Randy stays on point and teaches without any fluff at all.

In a world where content is either too short (think TikTok) or too long (think long-winded “jazz educators” who can’t play wel), Randy is a hero saving our day with precise high quality teaching.

All in all, the video delivers what he promises and adds to the already rich library of material he has on Mike’s Masterclasses. Strongly recommended!

Pros: Great explanation of how to approach soloing on a jazz blues.
Cons: None.
TLDR: Another great lesson from Randy Johnston. Recommended if you want your jazz blues soloing to outline the changes in a clearer way!

[Submissions for Review Consideration]

  • Are you an author who wrote a jazz, guitar or music book?
  • Have you created a DVD or an online video course or subscription based website?
  • Would you like me to review your book/course?

Please send me a message at azsamad2 at gmail.com with:

For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.

Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!

I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p

NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
