Video Review: Mastering Fast Moving Changes: Techniques for Soloing on ‘Confirmation’ by Randy Johnston

June 16, 2023 by azsamadlessons Leave a Comment

Bebop tunes are one of the challenges that many aspiring jazz guitarists struggle with, sometimes even after years of playing. Part of it are the fast tempos and the other part is the fact that there are so many chords and key changes happening from bar to bar.

Behold – Randy Johnston is here to help you finally once and for all get a hold of how to clearly and confidently navigate through fast moving changes.

Using Charlie Parker’s tune Confirmation, Randy gives us a 16-bar etude showing how to play well over these changes.

In addition to the etude, Randy also explains how to systematically practice the concepts he teaches on the guitar.

I love this video since he goes deep into one topic to really help you to get better at this. Randy also mentions related videos that he has previously created to complement this one including Playing Changes in One Octave By Randy Johnston that I reviewed years ago when i was still working with Mike’s Masterclasses.

In conclusion, I recommend this video if you feel overwhelmed with chord scales and want a better way to handle this type of changes. The concept he shows is seemingly simple but works. Try it out!

Pros: Clear lesson on playing over Confirmation and other tunes with fast moving changes.
Cons: None.
TLDR: If you’re playing too many vague lines and can’t seem to handle fast changes, get this to improve the clarity of your lines.

  • Have you created a DVD or an online video course or subscription based website?
  • Would you like me to review your book/course?

Please send me a message at azsamad2 at gmail.com with:

For courses: a link to the course/video/product + access info etc.
For books: a link to the book (Dropbox) or PDF attachment (if it’s small) for review consideration.

Depending on whether I dig the book/course, I’ll let you know if I do plan to review it!

I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p

NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
