This masterclass is the third part in a series called “Jazz Guitar Essentials” featuring Rodney Jones. Basically you get a 1 hour and 4 minute video recording of a Zoom session along with a 1-page transcription of voicings that Rodney played in the masterclass.
So that’s the dry version of what you get… but what’s really in this masterclass?
Well, in this video Rodney shares his personal approach to comping, how he thinks about voicings and how he practices this material.
He also shares how his approach differs from other players like Peter Bernstein, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Gilad Hekselman, and also what similarities are in their playing. Rodney’s teaching style mixes stories from his experience as a performer and his take on learning and teaching the material for years.
Besides talking about actual voicings and playing them through different examples, Rodney also shares concepts for using the voicings including in modal situations and how he uses them to both play lines and comp for himself.
He also talks about how he approaches comping for different players so that it complements their playing style.
Most of the video uses the song Autumn Leaves (in the key of Gminor) as a launchpad for discussion.
In conclusion, this masterclass is a cool way to wrap up the three part series that featured Rodney Jones in Fall 2024 for Chase’s Guitar Academy. After watching all three parts, I find that the series provides a good foundation for thinking, practicing and approaching jazz guitar in general. I certainly wished that I knew all this when I just began to learn jazz guitar. It would have saved me so much time! Still, I am grateful to experience this now especially since I did see Rodney Jones during the Alternative Guitar Camp 2024 last year. This is a nice extension of that experience in New York.
Pros: Good masterclass on comping from an experienced musician.
Cons: None.
TLDR: If you want to comp better, check out this video for ideas to improve your practice sessions.

I cannot guarantee a review for every submission & if I’m not too into it, I may opt not to review it. I mean, it’s better to get a good review that for me to write a bad review just because it’s not a match for the kind of stuff I dig right? :p
NOTE: All reviews reflect my honest personal opinion so be aware that I will point out both cool Pros and Cons that I see in the work. You dig?
